I'm assuming that you're using the Portable Hearing Lab with the generic hearing aid configuration. The volume control therin only affects the headphone volume at the line out. I assume that you're using a Portable Hearing Lab. This hardware provides 3.1V voltage supply on the line in (pink). If that matches your mic specifications it should work.

You're right - it's an index, not an angle. It points to the corresponding entry in the filter coefficient matrix.
In your example 36 is the correct choice.
